There are a lot of disasters that survivalists and preppers dread. Nuclear warfare. Lost in the wilderness. Hurricane or some other natural disaster. However, one of the scariest is, without a doubt, an electromagnetic pulse. One of these suckers can wipe out technology and set back society hundreds of years. All electronics are made completely useless. No power. No cars. No lights. No medical equipment, internet, cellphone service, hot water, and on it goes. You’d lose access to your money in the bank. People would die not only from lack of adequate medical care, but also because of the ensuing panic and chaos that would erupt.
Looting would be a common site. Sort of like what we witnessed after George Floyd’s death in 2020 but significantly worse. According to Urban Survival Site, studies have indicated that almost 90 percent of people would die after a year with no power.
So how do you not end up being one of the 90 percent?
Having the following 20 EMP-proof items as part of your survival kit is a good start.
I’ll discuss a few of the items in-depth and then leave a simple list for the rest.
A Bicycle
Cars and other modern-day vehicles that we take for granted to get us from point A to point B will be out of commission. You’ll want to have another means of travel and one of the few that will be available is a bicycle. A bike will get you around places fast so you can scout, scavenge for food or other supplies, or get the heck out of any hazardous areas.
Warm Clothes and Blankets
No power means no heat. And it gets da** cold in the fall and winter months. Especially at night. It’s essential stockpile warm clothing and blankets to help beat the cold in the winter and prevent hypothermia.
Just look at the record cold temperatures we saw across the midwestern United States last winter. What would happen if the power went out across that entire region? The interior of buildings and homes would have been warmer than outside, but not much warmer. Millions would have frozen. That’s why investing in heavy blankets, sleeping bags, and warm winter clothing is essential. You simply need to be prepared for when temperatures get really cold and you can’t get inside for warmth.
Books
The internet has spoiled us with its easy access to basically any piece of information we could possibly want to know. However, an EMP will erase the internet from existence. So how will you gain the knowledge you need to endure the various situations you find yourself in after a disaster of this magnitude?
Books.
Good old fashioned ink on paper. Hard copies.
And this isn’t just for information, either. You need novels and comic books and things of that nature to keep your mind occupied. Mental preparation and care is just as important to overall survival as anything you do for your physical health.
Weapons and Ammo
I think this one is pretty obvious. People who weren’t prepared for an EMP blast or any kind of survival situation will be in a panic to get what they need to live. And that means some will resort to banditry. You need to ensure you have the means to protect the stockpile of supplies you have so that you and your loved ones can make it through the disaster.
Just don’t lock up your weapons in a safe that requires a digital code or electronic pad for obvious reasons.
Candles
“We just talked about the importance of having blankets and warm clothing. That’s good, but it’s not good enough. No matter how many layers of warm clothing you bundle yourself up in, you’re still going to be very cold,” USS says. “Another solution? Fire. But while building a fire may be dangerous indoors, it won’t be dangerous (at least not incredibly dangerous) if you use candles, which are much easier to control and smaller. The warmth and light they’ll provide is minimal, but it’s still better than nothing.”
Here’s the rest of the list of things you should have to make it through an EMP:
- Cash
- Food
- Gardening tools/seeds
- Lighters
- Manual Can Opener
- Over-the-Counter medication/pain killers
- Personal hygiene items
- Solar panels
- Stove
- Toilet paper
- Toolkit
- Trash bags
- Water
- Wind-up Clock
- Whistle
