Another tragic school shooting has taken place in the United States, this time in Winder, Georgia, that has resulted in at least four individuals dead and many others injured. With shots ringing throughout the halls of the facility, students desperate to protect themselves scurried for cover. Several schools in the county went immediately into lockdown and parents frantically searched for information as a means of checking on whether or not they would be given another opportunity to hug their children. Can you imagine a more terrifying scenario?
According to CNN, four people died as a result of the shooting, which took place inside the halls and classrooms of Apalachee High School. Nine other individuals were wounded and transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Law enforcement sources said earlier approximately 30 people were injured in the shooting. It was unclear how many of those injuries are from gunshot wounds; the information is preliminary and subject to change. The suspected gunman is believed to be a 14-year-old boy, a law enforcement source told CNN. The source said it is not yet known whether the teen attended that school. The suspect is alive and in custody, the GBI said in a post on X.
The high school had received an earlier phone threat, multiple law enforcement officials told CNN. The phone call Wednesday morning warned there would be shootings at five schools, and that Apalachee would be the first. It is not known who placed the call. Officials tell CNN they are investigating the call and where it originated.
What’s unfortunate is leftist media, along with progressive politicians and activists, are going to be chomping at the bit to use this latest tragedy as a means of justifying calls to violate the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Granted, it’s understandable to be upset about how common these events have become in our country. And I don’t think you’ll find a single soul who will disagree that something needs to be done to change this.
Violating someone’s rights, especially those of innocent people, to stop these incidents is wrong.
A good example of this is how the CNN report cited in this very article reported a statistic that says there have been 385 mass shootings in 2024, a figure the outlet says it pulled from Gun Violence Archive. This organization, like CNN itself, defines a mass shooting as being an incident where 4 or more people are shot. That means a lot of shootings that would not have normally fit into that category, like gang shootings, are now being counted as mass shootings, despite having very different motivations and other factors involved in each.
“A source with knowledge of the situation, who is not authorized to speak to the media, told CNN that Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in North Georgia received two victims from the shooting. The source said one victim is an adult with a gunshot wound to the stomach currently in surgery and that another is a minor with unspecified injuries,” CNN reported. “The Barrow County School System told CNN students have been cleared to leave and parents have been notified to pick them up. Transportation will be provided to students who need it, the district said.”
Again, in the coming days, we’re going to likely see Kamala Harris and other Democrats running for political office find ways to use this incident against Republican opponents, rather than do the decent thing and discuss options for helping to solve this problem that don’t involve violating rights.
